Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday, celebrated mostly in the United States and Canada.  It is a day of giving thanks for the blessed harvest and also for giving thanks in advance for the harvest of the preceding year.

Many other countries around the world observe this similar celebrations but on a different date.  For the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November while in Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October.

Thanksgiving has its historical roots in religious and cultural traditions.   It has long been celebrated in a secular manner as well. After the harvest, prayers of thanks and special thanksgiving ceremonies are common among the religions.

In North America,  the Thanksgiving holiday’s history is rooted in English traditions which was dated from the Protestant Reformation.  It has the aspects of a harvest festival even though the harvest in New England occurs well before late November date while the modern Thanksgiving holiday is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November.

In most jurisdictions of Canada, Thanksgiving is now a statutory holiday with the exception of the Atlantic provinces of Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

Thanksgiving is celebrated among families, relatives and close friends.  It is a day that people will enjoy a feast of turkey, pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, turkey stuffings, cranberries sauce, cookies and many more.  Turkey is a must have on Thanksgiving Day and for this reason, this special Bird – TURKEY has a proclaimed pardon by the President of the United States to spare the bird’s life and to ensures that it will spend the duration of its life roaming freely on farmland.

People will be traveling back home to celebrate Thanksgiving Day with their families and it is during this time that flights are fully booked and traffic on the highway will be packed.  Safe driving should be observed when traveling back home to celebrate this day of thanks with your family and loved ones.

While we are celebrating Thanksgiving, let’s us all give a special moment of thanks to all the soldiers who have been deployed away from home to keep us safe.  Let’s us not forget those who could not make it home to celebrate with their families and wish them a blessed Thanksgiving Day.  Let’s us also not forget those who are homeless and not able to celebrate Thanksgiving Day.  If you see one on the street, give help to him or her and in return, you will be blessed with a good harvest or success in all your undertakings.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING everyone !!!

Happy Halloween

Halloween or Hallowe’en is also known as All Hallows’ Eve. It is a yearly celebration observed in many countries around the World on October 31.  It is also a day dedicated in remembrance of the dead and all believers who have faithful departed.  Halloween is also a time for honoring the saints and praying for the recently departed souls who have yet to reach Heaven.

Typical festive Halloween activities include trick or treat, decorating and carving pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, attending costume parties, playing pranks, telling scary stories and watching horror films.

Adults dressed up in costumes portraying frightening creatures that resemble supernatural figures such as witches, vampires, monsters, ghosts, skeletons and devils.  They are basically the traditional Halloween costumes while small children prefer the Disney characters.  Some of the popular characters are from fiction, celebrities and generic archetypes like ninjas and princesses.  Houses and yards are decorated with traditional images of skeletons, ghosts, graveyards scenes with night time creatures like bats.  These decoration can be scary, spooky and very creepy.

Children dressed in their disguise Halloween costumes  go door to door in their neighborhood for trick or treat night.  The very young children are usually accompanied by adults.  They are rewarded with sweets and chocolate bars when they go guising.

In the US, Halloween comes in the wake of the yearly apple harvest.   Candy apples, toffee apples and caramel apples are common Halloween treats made by rolling whole apples in a sticky sugar syrup.  Sometimes  they are rolled in nuts.  Families will celebrate Halloween with dinners and treats while some will be attending spooky parties.

A few years back when we were in Arizona, we had some 40 children who came to our door for trick or treat Halloween night and good thing we had enough candies and chocolate bars for them.  So how many children came knocking on your door last year and how many are you expecting this year?  Share with us by submitting a Comment.

Cockroach

Cockroaches are insects associated with human habitats.  They live in a wide range of environments around the world.  Cockroaches are consider as pests that invades our home and environments.  They prefer warm and moist conditions.

Cockroaches usually hide in the day and come out at night in search for food.  They are scavengers and eat almost any food.  Cockroaches leave chemical trails in their feces and emit airborne pheromones for swarming and mating.  Their chemical trails transmit bacteria onto the surfaces for other cockroaches to discover sources of food and water.

Generally Cockroaches are rather large insects.  Most species are about the size of a thumbnail but there are some much better species.  Australian giant burrowing cockroaches can reach up to 3.5 inches in length and weight more than 1.1oz.  They are consider the world’s heaviest cockroaches.

Cockroaches have relatively small heads with broad flattened bodies.  They have two pairs of wings of which the first pair of wings are tough and protective, lying as a shield on top of the second pair of membranous hind wings.

Female Cockroaches may produce up to eight egg cases in a lifetime.  Each case or capsule may contain around 40 eggs and in favorable conditions, a female cockroach can produce 300 to 400 offsprings.  In some species, the female cockroach needs to be impregnated only once to be able to lay eggs for the rest of her life.

Cockroaches are among the hardiest insects.  There are some species that are capable of remaining active for a month without food and can survive on limited resources.  Some can go without air for 45 minutes and there are cockroaches that are able to recover from being submerged underwater for half and hour.

Cockroaches are one of the most common household pest.  They feed on human and pet food and leave behind an offensive odor.  Cockroaches are linked with allergic reactions in humans which can cause asthma attacks.

Cockroaches hiding places are holes around baseboards, between kitchen cabinets, pipes, doors and windows, cupboards and drawers, boxes and garbage bins.  They are difficult to eradicate once they have infested an area.

Fire Ant

Fire Ants are one of the 285 species of Fire Ants.  The common Fire ants are the tropical fire ants, red ants and the ginger ants.

FireAnts can be distinguished from the other ants by their copper brown head and body with a darker abdomen.  A typical fire ant colony produces large mounds in open ares.  These ants feed mostly on young plants, seeds and crickets. Fire ants often attack small animals and kill them.

Other types of ants bite and spray acid on the wound but fire ants bite only to grip and then sting from the abdomen and inject a toxic alkaloid venom into the victim.  Fire ants bite humans and the sting can be very painful.  The sting sensation is similar to being burned by fire and that is how it got its name Fire ants.  The after effect of the sting can be deadly to some sensitive people.  The venom is both insecticidal and antibiotic.

Fire ants habitat is mainly in the soil, near moist areas like river banks, ponds, shores, watered lawn and highway shoulders.  Fire ants nest is usually not visible because it is built under objects like timber logs, rocks and bricks.  In open areas like fields, parks and lawns, their nest is built in a dome shaped mounds.  Colonies are founded by small groups of queens ant or single queens ant.  The colony can expand to thousands of individuals ants even when there is only one surviving queen ant.

Fire ants are invasive pests and can cause damage to agricultural assets, livestock loss and crop loss.  People living in fire ant infested areas are stung each year.

Some people are allergic to the venom of Fire ants and will require emergency treatment.  The sting swells into a bump which can be irritating and painful especially when  several stings are in the same area of the skin.  Scratching the bumps can become infection and result in scarring.  It is advisable to seek treatment immediately if you have a brief contact with a fire ant colony.  The numerous bites will be so intensely painful.

Demodex Mites

Demodex Mite

Demodex Mites

Demodex mites are tiny parasitic mites that live in and near hair follicles of mammals.  There are some 65 species of Demodex mites and two of such mites live on humans. They are the Demodex folliculorum and the Demodex brevis.  These two types of mites are also known as Eyelash mites.  Demodex canis live on domestic dogs.  Demodex mites can cause skin diseases.

Demodex folliculorum is usually found in hair follicles while Demodex brevis lives in sebaceous glands connected to hair follicles.  Both these two species of Demodex mites are primarily found in the face, near the nose, the eyelashes and eyebrows.  If a person scratches the infested area, these mites can be transfer to other areas of the body.

The adult Demodex mites are only about 0.3 – 0.4 millimetre long with elongated body.  The body are covered with scales for anchoring themselves in the hair follicles.  They have short segmented legs with pin like mouth parts for eating skin cells and oil (sebum)  accumulated in the hair follicles.  Demodex mites leave the hair follicles and move around on the skin while we sleep.  They are active during the night because they try to avoid the light.

Mating takes place in the hair follicle opening.  The female Demodex mites lay their eggs inside the hair follicles or sebaceous glands.  The larvae hatch in about three to four days and reach adult form in about seven days.  The lifespan of a Demodex mite is only several weeks.  The dead mites decompose inside the hair follicles or sebaceous glands.  Imagine having these Demodex mites mating in your face, your nose, eyelashes and eyebrows.  So make sure you clean your face and remove your makeups before you go to sleep and discard the cosmetics that you have been using a year ago.  It is better not to share cosmetics too.

Researches has indicated that the common skin Rosacea may be caused by the decomposing demodex mites, possibly due to the bacterium found in their bodies.  Older people are more likely to carry these mites than younger children and young adults but you never know till you feel crawling sensation on your face.

In most cases, these Demodex mites go unobserved without any adverse symptoms but in cases of suppressed immune system, the mites populations can dramatically increased in number.  Demodex mite bites are itchy and cause inflammation and other skin disorders.

Demodex canis live predominantly on domestic dogs but can occasionally infest humans through their pet dogs.  The infestation of these mites can develop into a condition called demodectic mange.  These mites are also known as mange mites  The lesions are found on the face, muzzle, forelimbs and periorbital  regions. In more sever form, these mites can result in secondary infection of red skin, numerous pustules and wrinkling of the skin.  Dogs with Demodex mites need to be treated immediately.

Biting Mites

Biting Mite

Biting Mites

Biting Mites are a number of different types of tiny bugs that bite humans.  They often cause an itchy welt or rash.  Many different types of mites can infest a home but not all species bite.  The most common biting mites are the rodent mites, bird mites, harvest mites and itch mites.  The dust mites infest nearly half of all homes but they do not bite humans.  People can develop an allergic reaction to their secretions though.

Biting mites are about the size of a period at the end of a sentence.  It is because of their small size that people are not aware of an infestation until they begin to feel the biting sensations or see tiny raised welts at the site where the biting mites insert their fangs.  Although their bites can be itchy and painful, most biting mites do not transmit diseases.

Some of the most common Biting mites are as follows :

Rodent Mites -  These mites live on mice and rats.  When the mice or rats die or leave their nest behind, the mites will migrate into homes to find new host and that is when they find you, they can bite humans.  Some of the species of rodent mites are the tropical rat mite, the house mouse mite and the spiny rat mite.  The tropical rat mite bites are the most painful and itchy of these three kind of mites. They can leave itchy welts and irritation of the skin.

Bird Mites -  Mites from nests of birds, chicken and fowls can infest and spread to humans who come into contact with them.  Pet birds can also become infested with bird mites.  Their bites are usually small and itchy which can last for a week or so.

Harvest Mites -  These mites are also known as chiggers mites.  It is when the mites are in the larval stage that they will bite humans.  These harvest mites are most common during the summer months.  They attach to humans when they walk through grasses or other vegetation. Harvest mites cling to skin and can feed on you for four days.

Itch Mites -  These mites are sometimes known as grain itch mites.  There are a number of species that feed primarily on insects but when they are attached to human, they can bite.  Their bite produces a very itchy  rash.

Scabies Mites -  These mites burrows and lay eggs into your skin.  Scabies mite bite cause an allergic reaction.   Their bites are very itchy and sore.  Scabies mites are contagious and can spread from one person to another by personal contact, hand shakes, sharing of clothing, beddings and from carpets.  These mites can cause you sleepless night as they tend to itch most during the night.  If someone is infested with these mites, the infested person and the family members need to seek treatment in order to get rid of them. The home and surroundings need to be carefully cleaned out.

Dust Mites

Dust Mites

Dust Mites

Dust mites or the House dust mites are cosmopolitan guests in human habitation.  Dust mites feed on organic debris such as flakes of shed human skin and they flourish in the stable environment of dwellings.

Dust mites are common cause of asthma and allergic symptoms.  The gut of mite contains potent digestive enzymes (proteases) that persist in their feces and these post as major inducers of allergic reactions like wheezing, itchy noses and eyes to severe asthma attacks.

Dust Mites are not insects but are closely related to spiders and ticks.  The two common dust mites are the American house dust mite and the European house dust mite.  Dust mites are small in size and are not visible to the naked eyes.

Both species of house dust mites feed on human skin scales, pollen, fungi, bacteria, lepidopteran (moth and butterfly) scales, animal dander and the skin scales of birds.  Dust mites survive best at relative humidities of 70-80% and temperature of 75-80 degree F.  House dust mites do not survive well at relatively low humidities.

Dust Mites live in carpet, bedding, couches, stuffed toys and old clothing.  They feed on the dead skin that falls off the bodies of humans and animals and on other organic debris found where they reside.

Adult female dust mites lay cream colored elliptical eggs coated with a sticky fluid that helps them adhere to the surrounding that they are in.  Under optimal conditions, the eggs cycle to adult dust mites in about a month.  Dust mite eggs pass through six developmental stages before they reach the adult form.

Dust mites do not live in air ducts in homes because they need 70 percent humidity or higher to survive and they need food too.  Areas where people and house hold pets spend their time like their beds, chairs and sofa sets are prime sites for dust mites.  The top part of the mattresses are the favorite hide out for dust mites.  We literally transport dust mites from room to room and from house to house when we move dirty clothing around.  Always leave dirty clothing in laundry baskets before laundry days.

Lice

Lice

Lice are wingless insects belonging to one of the 3,000 over species of Phthiraptera of which three of them are classified as human disease agents.  They are the head lice, body lice and the pubic lice.  The singular for lice is louse.

Most lice are scavengers, feeding on skin and other debris found on the host’s body.  Some species of lice feed on blood and sebaceous secretions.  Other mammals and birds have their own lice infecting them.

Head lice inhabit the scalp while body lice and pubic lice inhabit the body and pubic area respectively.  Lice generally cannot survive for a long period of time if they are removed from their host.

Lice are about the size of a sesame seeds.  They are tan to grayish white in color.  Adult lice may live up to 30 days on its host.  Female lice lay between 100 to 200 eggs during their lifespan which in average will be about 6-8 nits in 2 days.

Lice’s eggs are called nits.  Most lice attach their eggs to their host’s hair with their saliva based glue and when bonded to the hair, they are very difficult to sever without specialized products.  Lice are exopterygotes being born as miniature version of the adult lice, known as nymphs.  The young lice molt three times before they finally reach the adult form in about 10 days.

Lice are known to transmit microbial diseases or helminth parasites.  Lice infestations can be controlled and get rid off by using a lice comb and treating them with a special formulated enzyme.  Lice shampoo can also be used but not advisable because it may contain harmful toxic chemicals.

Sometimes people can mistaken nits for dandruff.  Dandruff is larger and white in color and can easily flicked off but nits will firmly attached to the hair close to the scalp.  Lice cause intense itchiness to the scalp and with heavy scratching, you may end with an infection along with the lice infestation.

Ticks

Tick

Ticks

Ticks are small external parasites that live on blood of mammals, birds and sometimes reptiles and amphibians.  Ticks are vectors of a number of diseases like Lyme disease, Q fever, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Colorado tick fever and African tick fever.

Some of the ticks are the American dog ticks, Brown dog ticks, deer ticks, bear ticks, Rocky Mountain Wood ticks, Lone star ticks, and Gulf Coast ticks.  But the common ones that are affecting humans, dog and cats are the dog ticks.

Dogs are prone to dog tick bites and tick borne diseases.  Ticks can crawl onto dogs when they go out in your yard and bring ticks into your home.  Tick bites on dogs are hard to detect unless you check your dog very carefully.

Ticks satisfy all their nutritional requirement on blood.  A female tick can lay up to 3,000 eggs in her lifetime. and undergo three primary stages of development to larval, nymphal and then adult.  When the larvae emerge, they feed on small mammals and birds.  After feeding, they detach themselves from the host and molt to nymphs on the ground.  This is when they feed on larger hosts and molt into adults ticks.  The male ticks feed very little but occupy themselves on larger hosts primarily for mating.

Tick borne diseases are caused by infection with a variety of pathogens and ticks can harbor more than one disease causing agent.  Therefore a tick patient can be infected with more than one pathogen at the same time, making it very difficult to diagnosis and to treat.

Deer ticks are dependent on white tailed deers for reproduction.  The female adult tick needs a large three day blood meals from the deer before she can reproduce and lay her 2,000 or more eggs.  The abundance and distribution of deer ticks correlated with deer densities.  If you go hunting, deer ticks can crawl onto you, feed on you and in turn, you can end up with some kind of tick diseases.

Scabies Mites

Scabies Mite

Scabies Mites

Scabies is a contagious skin infection caused by mite Sarcoptes scabiei.  Scabies Mites are very tiny microscopic parasite that burrows under the skin of their human host, causing intense allergic itching.

The scabies infection in animals is caused by a different but related species of mites known as the Sarcoptic Mange.  In the absent of animals like the dogs and cats, these Sarcoptic Mange mites will bite and suck on human blood.  Crusted scabies mites also known as the Norwegian scabies.  Those with a weaker immune system are fertile breeding ground for the crusted scabies mites.  Sufferers of crusted scabies mites exhibit scaly rashes and thick crusts of skin that contain thousands of mites making it harder to eradicates them.

Scabies Mites depend on humans and animals blood for food and for  their breeding process.  Scabies Mites are transmitted by direct skin to skin contact, infected clothing, beddings and seats.  These mites can spread quickly in family, child care centers, schools, hotels and nursing homes.   If someone in a family has scabies mites infection, it is advisable to treat the entire family or contact group to eliminate the mites.

Initial Scabies Mites infections require some 4 to 6 weeks to become symptomatic.  However reinfection of these mites may manifest symptoms within 24 hours.  Signs and symptoms of Scabies mites include itching which is often severe and it get worse at night.  These mites burrows in to skin with thin, irregular burrow tracks which is made up of tiny blisters and bumps on the skin.

The burrows or tracks of Scabies Mites appears in folds of the skin.  They are found between fingers, in armpits, around the waist, around breasts, along the insides of wrists, on inner elbows, soles of feet, around genital areas, on buttock, knees and around shoulder blade areas.  Scabies mites can also be found on scalp, face and neck.

The female scabies mites feed on blood of the host, lay and deposit their eggs in the burrows.  The eggs hatch into larvae in about two to three days and make their way to the surface of the skin.  This movement will cause the host irritation and scratching.  Scabies mites will thereby be picked up under the fingernails and hence the infection is spread to other areas of the host or passed on to their contacts by hand shakes and physical body contact.  Scabies mites can also be spread through contact with other objects such as clothing, bedding, furniture, car seats and safety belts of vehicles.

Fleas

Fleas

Fleas

Fleas are wingless insect forming the order of Siphonaptera.  They are external parasites that pierce the skin and suck blood from mammals and birds.  There are a variety of fleas species like the dog fleas, cat fleas, rat fleas and the rabbit fleas.

Fleas are about 1/16 to 1/8 inch long and their body is hard, polished with long legs.  Their bodies laterally compressed, permitting easy movement through hairs or feathers of their host.  Fleas’s body are tough and are able to withstand great pressure and can survive attempts to eliminate them by scratching or mashing.   Hard squeeze between fingers are insufficient to kill a flea. The hind legs are well adapted for jumping.  Fleas can jump vertically up to 7 inches and horizontally up to 13 inches, making them one of the best jumpers of all known insects.  Fleas jump from host to host and they can jump from cats or dogs to humans.

Fleas lay tiny white oval shaped eggs and they go through four life cycle stages of egg, larva, pupa and adult flea.   The adult flea must feed on blood before it can become capable of reproduction.  During the pupa phase, the larva is enclosed in a silken, debris covered cocoon.  Fleas make use of the fibre from our clothing to spin the cocoons.

Flea life cycle begins when the female flea lay eggs after feeding on blood.  Fleas lay eggs in batches of about 20 on their host and some eggs can easily roll onto the ground, your carpet, your beddings and sofa seats.  Hence, the areas where the host  sleep and rest become one of the primary habitats of eggs and developing fleas.  Flea eggs take about 2 to 14 days to hatch depending on the temperature condition.  Their total life span can be as short as one year but can be several years in ideal conditions. Female flea lay about 5,000 or more eggs in their lifetime and that is a phenomenal growth rates which means one pair of fleas can end in a very huge number.

Fleas can live for several months without blood meal when they are still in their pupa stage.  The optimum temperature for flea’s life cycle is about 70 degree F to about 85 degree F (21 degree C to about 30 degree C).

Flea bites are very itchy and can cause rashes and allergy reactions to the host.  The bites can remain itchy and inflamed, lasting to several weeks or months.  Fleas are vector of diseases.  They can transmit a variety of viral, bacterial and rickettsial diseases to humans, your pets and other animals.
